My experiences with computer and software is limited. I run a personal blog and a website via Wordpress and I highly enjoy creating websites whenever I can. One of my pet projects is a website called GWBuzz, www.gwbuzz.com, where I post information about my lab, GWBuzz and all of the exciting things that happen with our research. I manage media relations for GWBuzz which was started as publicity for Founding Famers and their bee hives.

As you can see, I am a Fine Art minor. Growing up, a woman in our neighborhood had a full clay studio with multiple kilns. She would allow all the neighborhood kids to take classes with her and I fell in love with clay. After a few years of absence from art, I started taking classes again at GW. My focus is in hand built and wheel thrown ceramics. I have taken calligraphy, drawing, and painting as well.

Where do I begin with the fun facts? I'm from southern California and currently spend most of my time in DC in the pool. I am a Center Defender on the Women's Water Polo team here at GW. Raise High! An incredibly fun fact about me is that I have appeared on TV many times, most recently being on an episode of MTV's MADE.

My artistic interests encompass a large range of mediums and materials. I tend to gravitate towards art that is modern and innovative especially in the field of ceramics and sculpture.

Response to Article:

Being a product of the generation talked about in the paper, I found it really difficult to relate. Since I was born in 1992, when all of the editing software was being used to create mass media, the concept of this composited media is all I have ever seen. With the exception of old movies and some TV shows, everything I have been exposed to has been stylized, edited and modified to perfection to create a unified image. Growing up in a world where ever image is digitally altered, it has impacted my life and the way I view media and art. One part of the article stood out to me in regards to how animation and effects have changed over the years. On page 7, the article mentions that when the programs that allowed for editing effects first came out, it was used to highlight or add to the aesthetic of the overall film. You were aware of the changes that were made and they were presented to you in a way that highlighted the changes. However, now that the effects are so seamlessly placed into TV shows or media, it has all blurred together. The concept of reality and what has been added or changed is the same. The media portrays information that was not originally there as a reality. The best example I can come up with is the movie Space Jam. Released in 1996, Space Jam used animated cartoons interact with live action film shots and made them fit seamlessly into one screen. However, as a small child, I was aware that Bugs Bunny was an animated cartoon and was placed there for added entertainment. Now, the animated aspects of films are edited in to create a since of hyper reality. The best example of this type of work is the Transformers franchise. The Autobots are added into the film and presented as a reality. The ability to create an image such as an autobot, is incredible in and of itself. It amazes me how quickly programs such as those mentioned in the article came to be. The programs being created to alter mass media seem to be on a exponential rise.

I may not be completely grasping the entirety of the article, mainly because I am unaware of the processes that created media before my time and quite frankly, am still unaware of the processes that create media today. Although I found this article interesting, it was hard to relate to the concepts presented due to my lack of knowledge of the subject.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality is literally the addition of something, whether it be an object or a change, that alters the original piece of work. This is done with layering objects through digital media to create a new type of reality. Since screens are a prevalent part of everyday life this concept developed recently to create a new art form that interacts can interact with people in a way they understand. My first visual when reading this article is the screen space in Times Square, NY. I envisioned augmented reality through the screens in the famous square.

The term itself was coined around 1990. Augmented reality was born from the concept of virtual reality. Augmented reality works with actual spaces that exist in the real world. Whether it be a projection on a sculpture, or interaction with an iPhone app, Augmented reality interacts with the surrounding world by adding layers of data and information to augment that space. Virtual reality works within a completely virtual field, such as the art of creating video games. Augmented reality can be an interesting and vast field of artwork in and of itself. Working with the world around you leaves virtually endless possibilities for types of interactions and layering. The article also talks about what this new reality means for architecture of art. Introducing another element of digital layering, we can use this concept to create and design buildings and sculptures that interact with the digital world. Augmented reality is also dependent upon the type of screen or interface being used. Limitations and layering dimensions are dependent on the size and capabilities of the screen.

This concept is something that is on the brink of development. Due to the exponential increase in technology and the interaction between humans and machine, the world of augmented reality is forever growing. One could express a similar piece of art in an infinite number of ways just due to the vastness of options of technology.
